In recirculating ball steering or cam-and-lever steering systems, the rotary movement of the steering column results in the sliding movement of the steering tie rods via the pitman arm attached to the steering gear. Besides the two outer steering tie rods, this type of construction also requires an intermediate rod and an additional idler arm. The above automotive steering components are interlinked with maintenance-free ball joints . The idler rod, the idler arm and the steering tie rods form a steering square ahead of the axle. The pitman arm transmits the rotary motion of the steering column to the idler rod.
